Life on the Farm – Spring 2009

With constant attention on the economy, Octomom, the extremes in weather, and the ever-present tragedy du jour, how are you all holding up? Personally, I find myself getting a little crabby. I know what’s going on, but do you have to keep telling me the same things over and over . . . ‘the sky is falling, the sky is falling’… I’m tired of hearing it.

So it was with great joy 16 and I noticed the first calf in the field on the way home from church Sunday. It obviously had just stood and was trying those first tentative steps. A most precious sight! Momma cow was standing proudly at its side and several other cows were nervously watching our permanent stray dog who was just as intrigued by the sight as we were. Yes, Spring has come to the farm!

My first Spring sighting had come a few nights before when I drove into Powhattan to fill the gas tank in the car. As I stepped out to the pump I was met with a cacophony of little froggy voices. This endless chirping has lulled me to sleep many a summer night. Welcome back, guys!

Dear hubby has also been busy. With the unknown’s of the economy we decided to put in a much larger garden than we have been. During the first 20 years of marriage I was fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home-mom. We always had a large garden and I spent many, many hours canning and freezing vegetables. Hot and sometimes tedious work, but oh so satisfying when I’d walk past the pantry and see shelves and shelves of jars sparkling in there. It’s going to be much harder to get things taken care of with both of us working full-time off the farm as well as still farming. But we’ll try our best. I’m thinking this year we just may need to provide for ourselves as much as possible.

I mentioned our permanent stray dog. Poor thing showed up just as the weather really got cold. He won’t come near us, but we started feeding him –moving the food slowly into the barn. He watches us and when we get far enough away he will come in and eat, but then leaves again. We’ve seen him in the wind-break out behind the in-laws and think that must be where he sleeps at night. He’s at least part black lab, is starting to look pretty healthy again. It’s frustrating he won’t let us get close to him, as he seems to be a pretty gentle dog. He doesn’t chase the cows or the cats, just watches. Makes you wonder what has happened in his lifetime.

As I’m writing this we are under some extreme weather warnings – for blizzard conditions of all things! Hopefully the snow will all be south of us. We have had two thunderstorms so far this month. Those of you who know me know these are one of my favorite events. I love to sit out on my porch and watch the lightning, hear the thunder roar across the fields, then listen to the rain. I love watching and hearing the birds prepare for storms. The complete and utter silence that happens just minutes before the storm hits. I swear you can hear a unison sigh of relief from every living thing as the storm passes. Can you believe we are so fortunate to live in a world such as this?!

Soon we will have our first litter of kittens. The men will begin spending their days in the fields preparing the soil and planting crops. There will be so many baby calves we’ll stop noticing the new ones, but be entertained by their joyful play. Seedlings will be visible in the garden and the never-ending battle of bugs and weeds will begin. And lilacs! My lilacs will be blooming, their heady fragrance adding the exclamation point to another beautiful Spring!

    Life is good! -cindy

    Good Monday Cindy…

Kind of neat that you know the areas I writing about with your visit here last year.

That summer sleepover will be fun for everyone. Nothing better than life on the farm.
The world would be a better place if more of us would go country.

Homemade waffles!!! That sounds good too!!!

We have not been getting as much rain as you farther north. But then there is that stormy corridor that seems to run across northern Kansas and through the middle of Iowa.

I have to admit I get a little crabby too id I watch the news. How come if we are so smart we act in such stupid ways?

On a brighter note…I also like going to sleep with the froggy noises and chirping going on outside my bedroom window.

You all have a wonderful spring and all be well. Safe travels too…Greg

I spent my entire childhood canning and freezing! You knew whose birthday it was by what was coming out of the garden. haha. So far, quiet spring, eh? Although the weather has changed so often, the headaches have been fast and furious and the blooms are late. Tornado month coming up! woo hoo!

Glad you came by and do let your friends and fam know I'm here! You can send them to my other blogsite or to my website at sueablesphotography.com if they want to look around. ; )

I also love thunderstorms. We have had several already. I wish it would get warm, though. It seems to be unseasonably cool here. I hope you are well. I hope your nephew is coming along. You haven't updated us on him in a while.

    Cindy,
We are kindred spirits.... I too love thunder storms and love to sit out on the porch and watch them..... The only time I don't appreciate them is when we are doing crew change in the skiff like we did last Thursday..... Don't mind the drowned rat feeling it's the lighting, metal and water mix that makes me cringe.......
The miracle of life is always so awe inspiring...... The first birthings in Spring is always such a reassuring sight. How fortunate you are that you and your family have the opportunity to see these wonders....
A garden is a good thing and I think that more and more people will be getting back to basics this year.. Being self sufficent is rewarding. I aggree with Greg about the garden veggies and getting your hands dirty- Nothing better or more rewarding..... I do miss my garden and the time I use to spend in it and all my flower beds. With my job I no longer have that rewarding satisfaction.... I sure do miss it......
Happy to hear all is well with you and your precious family.
I have passed by your area many times when I have ridden the Ohio river. When I am on the river I do wonder about all my blogging friends and if they live close to the towns that I pass on the river. I know where Powhatten is and have been by it many times on the Ohio.
I hope you and your precious family have a very blessed weekend my friend.~Love and Hugs~Marilyn~

    Hi gang…

I remember how special those calf births were on my grandfathers dairy farm. But I never wanted to get right in there and help like my granddad did…He was an amazing farmer.

Nothing better then your own garden vegetables. Not to mention getting ones hands in the soil.

Glad all is well. Looks like another blast of cold this weekend.

You all be well and as always safe travels…Greg

I do wish that you would post more often, C. Your writing takes me away and I am right there seeing the new calf on wobbly legs and the lilacs, oh the lilacs! They are one of my favorites.

It sounds so rewarding to work on the farm. I'd give up a whole lot just to get rid of my commute! haha

Anyway, I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for your comment on my last post. It's one of those things where I don't like posting downers, but sometimes, you just have to get it out. I'm glad you liked the song. When I first heard it, I took it humorously. Over time, and watching the video, it completely did a 180 degree turn and it totally stirs me.

Take care, Cindy! Thanks again for stopping by. I know I've slacked on my blog-walking. Good to know we're still in touch.

    *Hugs!*

I love reading about your life on the farm. It is so important to be as self sufficient as possible these days. I am pondering a bigger garden this year but am uncertain. My husband is out of work, and quite honestly I don't know how long we'll be able to hang on to the house. Everything is so up in the air for us. Limbo Land is what I am calling it. I am glad you are caring for the stray dog. I just watched Marley & Me so I am a bit sensitive where dogs are concerned. Maybe with your kindness and perserverance he will begin to trust you. Did you get the blizzard? So far it has missed us. The winds here were coming in from the south so we got the wintery mix instead. With most in the form of rain, but it is snowing here again right now. Thanks a lot for visiting me at my new site. You are one of my oldest and dearest Spaces friends and I never want to lose touch with you. Hugs, Liz http://fototrek.net/

Well if I was closer I would sure be happy to come by and help with all that garden work. I love to can! I just have solid rock here and not enough time to do a garden on my own. But who knows maybe this year it will happen. Seeing as we are to get snow this weekend I guess I can wait till next week. I just got my worm bed going and I am hoping for some great soil. Take care and enjoy.

Hi Cindy, it sounds wonderful there, even the stray dog is enjoying himself and being taken care of.
I miss those thunder and lightening storms you get down south, use to love them.
Up here it is snowing again and Mount Redoubt the volcano is erupting, but is obscurred by the storm.
Take Care and hugs from Alaska
